Service Sheet Sunday 4 July 2021

PRE SERVICE SONG: GOD OF ALL MY DAYS

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader:  In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.

They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment.

All:  The children of your servants will live in your presence;

their descendants will be established before you.

Leader: We praise you Lord, who crowns us with love and compassion, who satisfies our  desires with good things so that our youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

All:  From everlasting to everlasting your love is with those who fear you, O Lord,

and your righteousness with their children’s children, with those who keep your covenant, and remember to obey your commandments.

OPENING HYMN: THE HEART OF WORSHIP

Leader:  Now is the time to turn to God and seek his mercy, for we have strayed from his ways like lost sheep, but like a good shepherd he has sought us and saved us, and longs to forgive our sins.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

All: Almighty God, into whose holy city nothing unclean shall enter,

nor anyone whose ways are false or foul,

we confess our sins with sorrow.
To You are due homage and obedience,

but we have rebelled against Your discipline and broken Your laws.
To You we owe willing and loyal service,

but we have neglected the duties required of us.

Given a little worldly authority,

we have grown proud and overbearing.
We who need to be forgiven by You,

have often failed to forgive others.
Most merciful God, have mercy on us.
Subdue our rebellious spirits;

humble our pride,

and grant us remission of all our sins;

for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Peace of God — 1 Timothy 1:15; John 3:16

Leader: Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into  the world to save sinners.

All:  For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Leader:  The peace of the Lord be always with you.

 All:  And also with you.

THE STATEMENT OF FAITH

Leader:  We say the Creed together

All:  I believe in God, the Father almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried.

He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.  Amen.

PRAYER BEFORE READING

All: O God, by your Spirit tell us what we need to hear,

and show us what we ought to do,

to obey Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Amen.

READING:  ROMANS 14:13-23

read by Hansie Kandora

13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister. 14 I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean. 15 If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died. 16 Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, 18 because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval.

19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. 20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. 21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.

22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.[c]
